Duval, E.H. 2005 Journal Isle Boca Brava, Chiriqui, Panama 8 May 2005 Today Red fledged - which is appropriate as he is 16 days old on the nose. I netted alone at EDM for the mornig from 9-12, and kept Red with me. He spent part of the time perching in a tree where I placed him. Then, after I put him back in the nest, he deliberately climbed up on the edge and took a fluthen leap to the ground. He also developed "altitude" in the space of two hours. He started actually assessing his environment, tracking more than just my fingers with his head, responding with a "churp!" when I snapped my fingers, and (a real first) refusing certain types of food (at least some of the time). By evening, he was able to hopfully from his nest to the edge of the box. He's fully feathered (except for his head and tail), though his body feathers are extremely fluffy & downy. We had heavy rain in the evening starting at 4:45pm and lastig until about 7:00pm.
