16 March 2005 - to Isla Boca Brava
I changed $200 in Traveller's Checks and finally got to call Frank who said it was OK to come to the island. We arrived by ~4pm because Frank had alerted Jovené (Junior), who had been waiting for us at the crossroads for over an hour. I paid him $20 for the taxi to Boca Chica because of the wait, and extracted a promise to teach me to use a lasso. We were immediately pressed into the beer-and-gossip ritual on the island and barely unpacked before going to bed.
March 17
17 March 2005 - We walked the length of the study site, stopping at key display areas to see how Anne & Steve do at band reading and to get them used to walking off-trail. The next few days will be "orientation" to the island. We saw a pair of Laughing Falcons duetting in their typical "guaco" call near the first (easternmost) beach. The contribution of each individual is different: one says "gua-gua-gua-gua" and the other fills in "co...co...co..." They frequently get off by half a beat & change rhythm. It would be easy to
