15 April 2005 - partly cloudy all day - moderate
amounts of manakin activity. I spent the
whole day mistnetting for unbanded females
with nests. I caught two more of
these unbanded moms, but to my dismay
found that the chicks in at least one nest
targeted yesterday had died. Steve checked
them at 11:15 am and found them extremely
hungry. I stopped by on my way back to
the cabin at 14:00 and found them both
cold and freshly dead. There was one ant
investigating one chick, but they were otherwise
untouched. I collected them, removed their
bands for reuse (I banded #700 today,
and the metal bands ran out at #800). I
preserved them both in EtOH with the S-1
baby. This really is a particularly high nest
failure rate after catching the female. I'm
not sure what I can do about it - I've
got to band the females to
check paternity... Perhaps more broad-
scale mistnetting away from the immediate
nest area? Either way, my heart's just
not in mistnetting these females now.
