Journal Isla Boca Brava, Chiriguí Prov., Panamá 4 May 2003 An inch of rain fell starting at 4:00pm, giving us a good reason to head back to the rancho and organize nest sheets before dinner. We're both soundly exhausted. BWG (DM), the β at CC5, finally showed up at a 2-hour watch there today. There have been basically no birds present since the α, BYY (DM), was removed and collected on May 1. I was beginning to think that no one would take over that site at all. So why are some sites immediately filled (WELY, SNK) and some linger basically unclaimed (CC5, TCJ)? BYY was an old alpha (α of CCLY for CC5 since 2000), and BWG was frequently absent before he was removed as well. At lunch, a Panama Flycatcher was seen chasing and attacking a male and female Red-legged Honeycreeper. The flycatcher actually bit one of the honeycreepers in mid- air. This happened near the rocks on first beach. Maybe the flycatcher has a nest?
