Julie and Chris left with Frank to
take their vacation in Puerto Viejo, Costa
Rica. I'm still very dry here.

I skipped the morning watches to sort data
sheets and assess where we are in the
task of identifying alphas and betas. In
the late morning I went to check nest
E-21 and found that the nest had
partially disintegrated, forming a hole that
dumped the chick and egg out. I had
checked it two days before and found one
chick just barely peeking his way out of
the egg. I picked up and could hear
his steady "tap, tap, tap." I searched
through the leaf litter below the nest and
found no sign of the egg, & but I followed
a faint peeping noise to the chick. He
was getting cold, but was still moving around
and the female was frantically mobbing me.
