Road to Changuinola from David, Chiriqui and Bocas, Panama
8 May 2002
We took a bus across the Cordillera to Changuinola
and spent the night there, as the border
crossing had already closed. The difference in
precipitation between the Caribbean & Pacific sides of
Panama's county is really amazing. The road passes Fortune
Biological Station, and we passed a suspiciously
biologist looking man in foul weather gear at a
crossroads. The road passes a tree with
6 or so oropendola nests, and there
is a profusion of Ngäbe villages just
over the mountains.
Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

We stayed at Casa Verde in Puerto Viejo, Costa
Rica, which caters to poison dart frogs.
I saw Dendrobates pumilio and D. auratus
in their garden + mini-vivarium. Puerto
Viejo is overrun with American ex-pats +
backpackers, even in the off season, but
it was still a lovely place. Hot showers!

We hiked down the black sand beach in
the morning, accompanied by three local dogs,
and I caught a D. auratus (green with
