DuVal, E.H. 2001 Journal Isla Boca Brava, Chirigui Prov., Panama [10 May ca1] across reasonably large physical barriers. How exciting! And no wonder we keep finding additional unbanded DMs around here. I tried to net Y4B one last time, & he eluded me yet again. This is a real problem for the hormonal study. But after four straight days of trying I was forced to give in and take down the nets. Hopefully we'll be able to sample at least 6 alpha-beta pairs by the time the season is through... Two of my empty nests had eggs today. We're well into the second wave of nesting, to be sure. I've found 36 active nests so far this year - and we've just passed the halfway mark! A record. There was a new insect phenomenon today. A large ant-like insect (they look like a cross between ants x mole crickets) has excavated holes all along main street & the adjoining path, overnight. Each hole is the same diameter (~1cm) and is surrounded by a ring of balls of earth. Some of the holes are plugged from within by more dirt. It looks like there's just one insect per hole.
