Duval, E.H. 2001 Journal Isla Boca Brava, Chiriqui Prov, Panama 22 April 2001 Four nests with CHICKS failed today. An amazing streak of bad luck. One of the nests, R-2, definitely belonged to VVB - the one and only manakin whose blood is not on record. I went to set nets around the nest, and found her chicks dead & drying up. She came and flitted nearby, just long enough for me to confirm her bands. If she were simply abandoning the chicks, it seems odd that she would hang out and be worried after they were already dead. But then again, what else could have happened? I set a net, since she was in the area but didn't catch her. We had a good netting day, at least. Two more unbanded DMs were caught at Second Beach. 23 April 2001 We wrapped up netting at SBE, and we never did catch any of the key DMs for hormone samples.
