The new idea for today is that I could present a fake f manakin to males on the display perch to incite dancing, hopefully, dominance-related behavior. If it works, I could use this to test the idea that beta males just act (less frequently) as dominant at subsidiary display perches. Finally, an experimental element to the work! If only the manakins will respond appropriately to a manakin manequin. Makes me wish I had Dave McDonald's paper on his plumage experiments here. Eric has already carved a styrofoam manakin for a first attempt. 8 April 2001 3 observations each today, as usual. The males at Acacia seem to have returned to their old places and are doing their usual long QR bouts, but it's GGR (DM) and a bCB now. I'm surprised that no DM has moved in.
