Isla Boca Brava, Chiriqui Prov., Panama
20 June 2010 Clear AM, overcast PM; no rain until night 6mm
Today we netted on Isla
Linarke, the closest island to Boca
Brava. There was very, very little manakin
action, though we saw many long-tailed
(all unbanded) I heard one (relatively
short) QR bout all day. Mark found
a nest with 7-11 day-old chicks. We
banded these (Bal x Gal) and target-netted
their mother. The other nets caught
only 3 manakins (all DM). One DM
had a very scaly breast (almost brood-
patch-like), and all had body feathers
in pin. I wish we knew whether
the TBB manakins were as quiet
today... We didn't take the time to
do much exploring unfortunately.
Next year, it would be best to
go there earlier in
the breeding season,
I suppose.
-We also caught
a white-tipped
dove and green kingfisher. There's a
vulture roost over the main path.
We banded 3 additional old manakin
isolated palms
