DoVal, E. H. 2000 Journal Isla Boca Brava, Chiriqui Prov., Panama 28 May cut here on Isla Boca Brava. Don Luis says that a man named John Zook, who is a Costa Rican ornithologist, went to Las Alturas (in a lower area than the station where I stayed last year) and noted that the lance-tailed manakin behavior seemed strange. He wasn't sure which species to classify them as. I meant to get Zook's email but forgot to ask for it before leaving. I'll have to email Luis. In La Amistad I saw two DM's 'que-rico' together, and found a more dense (a ranger) population near the coffee field of Rafael, up the road a ways from Las Tablas ranger station. The vocalizations seemed identical to those here, though they didn't seem to be doing much QRily and I heard no dancing. We also saw 3-wattled bellbirds, a chestnut-mandibled toucan, and a flock of crested guans. The station is lovely, if a bit tense & gun-heavy due to conflicts with poachers in the park. It seems like it would be a nice place to work. Ask at the MINAE office in San Vito for info on use of the ranger's house.
