6 May cont. got the mom's combo - # AOG. Yikes!
Two more genetics data points, though one of
the babies is dead. Mark caught AOG
eating the chick's fecal sacs; the
fourth time he's seen such a thing during
nest-watches. The female feeds the
babies first, then picks off a sac &
simply swallows it. The babies do regurgitate
fruit seeds that are too large to be
digested, just like the adults. I've found
them in the nest with a fresh, cleaned
pit resting by their bill - #4 was littered
with two kinds of pits. I collected
samples of both & stored them in a manilla
envelope on 5/5/00. The clinging seeds often
(~50% of 8 seeds) housed large, white guts
that had eaten away the inside.
May 2000 Clear & sunny, 87° in the morning.
13mm of rain in the afternoon.
The telemetry equipment
continues to cause problems. I couldn't
get a signal from any of the birds
all morning, except for a few faint
beeps from BOY & RBV when I was
up near the cleared lots: they're
