Microtus mordax
July 4 2mi E Pine Flat Tulare Co. Calif.
Caught 2 in the 75 traps.
Farrel area - Sierra Nevada.
Life zone - Transition.
Habitat - Denely littered and brushy areas along the stream (small). The lack of, or small amount of grass is probably the decisive factor regulating the quantity of mice along the stream.
July 6 Parker Meadow, at 400 ft. - Tulare Co. Calif.
My catch included 14 of this species in the 115 traps.
Farrel area - Sierra Nevada.
Life zone - Canadian.
Habitat - Along the stream or in the meadow where grass or grass-land cover affords protection and food. Their runways can be found in the grass along the stream or about the meadow, along the runways as if to feed cuttings of grass which have evidently been selected for food. They are often caught away from their runways in other protected places.
Caught 3 more this evening.
July 7 My catch included 2 this morning, and 6 in the evening (115 traps).
July 9 Caught 5 this morning in about 50 traps.
