Peteekq 1943 Nov.6. Berkeley Hills, Alameda Co., Calif. Hiked up Panoramic Way and onto ridge above the blind school over- looking Claremont Canyon. One Calif. Jay was noted sunning itself on a perch overlooking a stretch of Baccharis chaparral on a south-facing slope. A Rufous-crowned Sparrow was present on one of the high grass slopes where there were scattered Baccharis shrubs. An adult male Cooper's Hawk was seen flying only a few feet above the ground over one of the grass-covered hills, apparently hunting for small passerines. Two Fliskers were noted in the canyon behind the blind school. Dec.29 Canyon Road, Berkeley Robin and Spotted Towhee noted feeding on ivy berries. 1944 Jan.23. Oakland: Mottled Dusky-owl and Willets noted among other smaller sandpipers on tidal flats along Bay Bridge approach. Feb.27 Woolsey Canyon - Oaks, buckeyes, and Baccharis breaking out with new foliage in several local areas, most generally true of Baccharis. Two lupine shrubs in blossom (i.e., westward) on lower south facing slope of canyon
