1954 Carpodacus mexicanus May 15 Queens Road, Berkeley, Calif. Nest¹ with 6 eggs against house, to right of front door. Contained only 5 eggs on May 29. Interference, which is fairly frequent, + coolness of position of nest may be responsible for delay in hatching. Nest 2 with 3 eggs on S side of very post, about 6 feet above ground. Contained two eggs on May 22. Apparently deserted. May 22. Nest 3 with young on N side of very post about 8 feet above the ground. Parents bringing food, and one fairly well grown young out and following parents. Another & building (Nest 4) on E side of post about 5 feet below lowest crossbar. Nesting material being brought her also on May 29. Copulation observed on May 29. May 22 Nest 5 on N side of post about 3 feet below, being built on May 22, pair observed entering here in following week. May 23 Chases occur among ♀♀'s as well as ♂♂'s. ♂♂'s follow ♀♀'s and seem to be aggressive usually in the presence of and near their mates, or just after mate enters nest sites. Male at one of the post nests displayed before ♀ of Nest 1 as she perched on nearby wires; he uttering shrill sex note and attempting to approach her, while she chased him in small arcs around the post area.
