P. Teltka 1960 Pipilo fuscus 5 May Berkeley, Calif. First singing of P. fuscus heard. 8 May Intense territorial fight between two pairs in our yard. Males on grass climbing up into air about 20 feet above rhododendron, then dropping to ground. Actual skirmishes involved all four birds; but males (one banded) were the main ones for this fight, and in the one long tussle. Other member of resident pair a 1st year ?, appeared within past week. Two pairs after fight, moved slowly to W [toward fence], with banded male and his female supplementing the first, which left. Same day observed mouthling grass. May 11 Nest in Erica about 5½ feet above ground, May 15 Nest almost completed in outside brick, but not lined. Towhee calling at dusk, from choke cherry at NW corner of house, broke into song intermittently. But chips were soft and weakened terminally (a ? or 1st-year bird? Not the banded ?). 19 3 eggs, 3 1 yng hatched May 31; died on June 1; last egg unhatched 4 morning & 2nd.
