Pipilo fuscus
Queens Rd., Berkeley, California.
Oct. 13 Adult plumaged member of pair around my home removed. Molt completed.
Not sexed, presumably a male [proves to be a second-to-sex adult taken Oct. 2]
Oct. 16 Remaining towhee joined the next day. A
second bird taken today as a first-year
individual, 61.8 gms, testes 1 mm. Juvenile
feathers and remiges all retained, molt
heavy otherwise.

Remaining adult heard chipping loudly in
late afternoon -- as to the responses of neighbors.
It noticeably more
moved about its territory than when
a pair is present.
Oct. 25 Adult ♂ 51.7 gms. Testes 2 mm.
Molt completed
Oct 30 1st-y male 49.5, Testes 1.5 mm.
Molt complete. Rectrices 5-5 first-year;
others new; Remiges 1st year; large
skull windows.
Nov. 10 In meantime, one brown towhee present
in the area, occasional contacts with neighbors
evident, but no pair present. Single
bud, as noted before, does considerable
amount of moving about.
