Ptelka 1947 Pipilo fuscus April 13 Woolsey Canyon One heard singing, ending series of chip notes with several notes of slightly more liquid quality, alternating on two different patches: thus, March 13 Pair observed mating. May 11 Brown Towhee along south border of Woolsey Canyon tract observed in territorial border encounters with neighbouring two fawns (see map). Male sang twice, and pair from oak border area to north came up promptly, apparently to borders of their terr- tory. April 27 Members of a pair observed moving excitedly through brush near (5-10 feet) other bird, singing a soft, fluttering series of notes. During this song, it fluttered its wings as it moved and held its tail raised Aug. 10 One brown towhee observed chasing another; it gave a rattle note characteristic of territorial squabbles in this species; after this, it uttered the usual pair-reinforcement, although another individual was not noted.
