Aphelocoma coerulescens
May 15 U.C. campus
Pair of Steller jays foraging on ground
below redwoods, then to edge of giant
teleworks. Calif jay chased one
of them in fearful manner, diving so in
two flights, which brought them
under redwoods. Then Steller jays
continued foraging, while the Calif jay
stopped also and hopped around
on beach shaded but open ground, and
did not chase again.

March 15
Pair of scrub jays present regularly
at NW corner LSB. Male seen perched
in open holly trees as female approached
him and received nesting material
from him. There were at least three
strands or pieces of twiglets or leaf
stems, and so the female approaching
the perched male from above, bent
over him slightly and grasped
several times in order to get all
pieces he held. The female then
moved about a neighboring dividor,
finally taking a perch at the top
and remaining there quietly. All
this time she held the nest
material. After 10 minutes, the
observation was stopped.
