Aphelecoma coerulecens
April 13 Woolsey Canyon
collar pattern and dull color, a female.
Aug. 10 One scrub jay present in group of 4 C. stelleri; all
feeding in oak canopy. Two Steller jays left
flying NWward across canyon; the scrub jay
started out to follow them, flew 30 or 40 feet,
but returned to a tree on the same (S) side of
canyon. Two scrub jays then flew [illegible]
thecanyon to the spot where Steller jays
were present and may have included the
single scrub jay.
1948
Feb. 17 Adult present along W side and around
SW corner during late January and February
passion today with a smaller, first-
year bird with a frayed tail, taken to
be female. She was observed searching
for and picking up nesting material,
but she did not carry any, though she
did fly to what appeared to be a nesting
site. The male followed her, giving
the moderately loud trile note occasionally,
lest otherwise remaining quiet. Earlier,
in late January and even last week-end
(Feb. 14-15), the called loudly off and
on. There had been a pair in the area
in Nov. and December, seen frequently
gone from my office window as they forage
in and around the vegetation; but one
