July 11 Wolsey Canyon, Berkeley, 800 ft, Alameda Co., Cal.
there were Spizella passerina (adults with well-grown young), Parusina
anvena and Melospiza melodia.
In the open fields (vicinity of willow thickets mentioned earlier)
there were several species feeding on seeds of the dried grasses and herbs.
These were Carpodacus mexicanus,
Spinus pinus, S. psaltria; and S.
laurencei. Only one or two individuals
of the siskin and green-backed goldfinch
were present but there were at least
10 or 12 Lawrence goldfinches. Marshall
reported 2 or 3 times as many being
present yesterday.
