Selasphorus rufus
7 April Botanical Gardens, UC campus
1130-1150 a.m. Watched Abutilon bush and environs, where color-marked S. rufus had been stationed earlier. In just 5 min or so, all quiet, except for Selasphorus female which appeared from east (uphill), set within bush, then left. She reappeared 2-3 minutes later. Almost immediately after her second appearance, a & rufus appeared and perched prominently on a twig-tip of a neighboring leafless tree. He faced my direction, and showed the red colorband on his left leg. Following a pause in the movement of the ? with the bush, she moved again, whereupon the & rufus rose & performed 4 full dives, identical in orientation, depth, and intensity. The display was entirely typical & rufus, with the head-twitch sound at the bottom of the dive, followed by the tail-action sound observed with S. sasin. At the end of the 4th dive, the & returned to a prominent twig on the same leafless tree (The ? Selasphorus disappeared.) He moved about coming down onto the west (other) side of the Abutilon bush, returned to his (out)
