FAP 1961 Selasphorus rufus March 3 Berkeley, California Male present on W facing slope below home, active among low trees in blossom or shortly to blossom (acacia, ornamental fruit tree) and in the neighbor's garden. The hummer was more or less regularly present in one of three ornamental apple trees. Other hummers evoked chases and chirping; also short arc displays within bushes or trees. No full aerial display was seen. March 25 Male rufus present continually. Occasionally other hummers present, but prior to this date, no aerial display was seen. This morning — a clear, bright morning following upon a warm interval of a few days [past few weeks very cool] — th male performed at least four full arc-displays characteristic of rufus. April 8 Male rufus continually present until this date, possibly a few days longer into the following week, but not noted on April 14-16. No further aerial displays seen after March 25. On that date and subsequently, a male used used the slope as a territorial site, but not continually.
