1957 22 July Queens Rd, Berkeley, Calif. through the grating phrases of [illegible] adults' song. 29 July ♀/ moves less ♂1 constantly perched at site in camphor tree. But spends more time in visits to lower slope and sings for short periods from open perch in pyracantha, near site used by ♂2. Latten (at least a young ♂ still without fully adult song) present intermittently, noted at least twice, when present for short periods and singing. ♂1 seems to participate in chase to eucalypts, to the west. Aug 3 A young male present continually in Burn Thicket, presumably same as ♂2 above. ♂1 present continually. Intermittent conflict noted repeatedly since the 29th. ♂2 enters core area of ♂1 more frequently than earlier. Today, entered from from corner of house, flew in spurts, giving a single, chopped chup! note 5 or 6 times, at each stop, then perched atop the japanese apricot, about 10 feet from ♂1. ♂1 chattered. ♂2 flew downslope, with no chase by ♂1. Aug 4 Another encounter, this time when ♂2 arrived near the japanese apricot. ♂1 flew out and they clashed momentarily,
