Calyptra anna 1957 21 July Queens Rd, Berkeley weeks, still underway. Arg intermittently, full bodied song; generally quiet and at times, in past week, suspiciously unresponsive to intruders. One, appeared, moved abt garden, or chipped, intruder approached, perched within about 15-20 inches of, w/constant, chipping at moderate tempo. Intruder then moved to another perch above the B, again about 15-20 inches; a close ensued. On another occasion as intruder passed by, B chipped, remained perched and as the intruder was just passing it, B flashed his wing out once, chipping a few more times and calming forth. On several occasions, a brief intrusion into the territory must have been evident to the B, because I saw sounds and movements, but no close ensued. In general, the few chases which occurred were responses, only to rather persistent or protracted stimulus. Since about July 10, a mole has been present in Dunwoody next to a large fuchsia, around a corner of the house, about 100 feet away.
