July 10 - Estação Ecológica de Acauã, 17 km N Turmalina,
Minas Gerais, 17°08'S 42°46'W 800 m. Acauã is a
5,900 ha Ecological station created in 1968 and
managed by the Instituto Estadual de Florestas
(IEF-MG). The vegetation is mainly "Floresta
Estacional semi-decidual" (seasonal semi-deciduous
forest) with a very small portion of "Cerrado"
(savanna). We arrived in the morning and met
José Roberto de Oliveira (manager), his wife Eurica
(secretary), and three rangers - José Alberto,
Walmir and Luís. Set two trap lines: #1) along
Córrego do Retiro, approx. 3.5 km S Acauã - 15 trap
stations with 2 traps in each station, one on the
ground and one in the trees, #2) behind the village,
along the creek that flows into the reservoir -
23 trap stations - same as above. Oat and peanut
butter as bait in Shermans, and pineapple and
codfish liver oil in Tomahawks.
