Stebbins, R. 1963 208 Asian Trip Kuala Lumpur Feb. 8 Deutschman feels BSCS, PSSC, etc. are oriented toward preparing students for college careers in science. This is not needed on such a grand scale in Malaya. U.K. equipment to outfit the secondary school physics course is about 10-12 times more expensive than U.S., ($2500 vs $200) - PSSC approach. Form 5 exams, mostly repeat experiments done before in class. Feb. 9 Dr. Dahlqvist and Dave Wells drove me to the sea-coast town of Klang and thence 4 1/2 mi. north to a coconut grove where Wells has seen Draco. Enroute we passed through many rubber plantations. The milky sap was being collected in some groves. The tree came from Brazil. There is no native rubber. A fresh cut is made each morning. The sap flows for 1 or 2 hrs. into a small collecting cup. The contents are gathered thereafter, and the cups turned over down. One can see the old scars from previous cuts. Cuts are started at a height of 6-8 ft. and end up near ground level.
