State Dept. people interested at the time (one a classmate of Dart's wife) reported the acceptance of the Communist program. This is not what we wanted to hear. These people were labelled as pink & McCarthy went after them. Dart's friend lost everything - career, stature, etc. Many years later he was able to get his case before the U.S. Supreme Court and he was completely exonerated but the damage had been done. It is now known these State Dept. people were right. The State Dept. now may wish to change its views somewhat but the U.S. public does. They have been over sold on the idea of not recognizing China. Dart feels that despite our pressure tactics to keep the Chinese question off the UN agenda that sooner or later it will come to a vote and we will lose. If China gets nuclear power, then why should she join a nuclear control system?
