Feb., R. 1963 134 Asian Trip Bangkok Jan..28 Grades 1-4 are compulsory. Actually the Ministry of Education has done quite well. The World Bank is considering giving them a loan but Lucas did not know how much was earmarked for science. The Asia Foundation is helping mostly at the University level and has been aiding the Science Society. This society, the Nat'l Research Council and the Ministry of Education are the key organs that would be involved in science curriculum reform. All this Universities are in Bangkok except me. Bangkok has about 2 million people. The northern part of the country is little populated. It is somewhat mountainous and there is rather heavy jungle. Roads, until recently had been kept rather poorly developed in Bangkok for the theory they would interfere with the railroads. The view has change and improvements are underway. Transport is adequate & easily get secondary school children students to the University. Lucas mentioned that Chonburi, a pretty hilly country & SE would be a good place for a visit.
