Stubbs, R. 1963 Ascain Trip 78 Karachi Jan. 18 Grades 11-12. - Frere Rd. The 4th Annual Science Fair ended just a few weeks ago. Siddeique involved. Like Delhi this place swarms with kites (Chali), term also used here, and the gray-mantled crow. There is less respect for bird life, however. The tricycle taxis are here, very neatly decorated with plastic colored patterns and bright paint. Dr. Timber says that they're dangerous - many accidents. The countryside is absolutely flat in the city. The climate is dry - I think Timber said = 6-10 inches of rain a year - when Monsoon came in June. Sun rises & sets without few cloud effects during the dry season. I've seen bands of sheep & goats, marked with colored dyes. Jan. 19 Picked up by James Potafield of A.I.D. Spent some time at his office talking about my mission. He is not very happy with his post. He's concerned with the widespread dishonesty of the people which may have bearing on science teaching. Potafield got his degree at Calif. He's been in Karachi 10 mos. Was an attractive wife & 2 baby girls. Lived in a modern tub-style home. Very nice.
