then continued west on Calif. Hwy 58 to
Calif. Hwy 395, then drove north. Along
the route (earlier) I had turned off I-40
to investigate the Providence Mountains, but
I found no good road to use -- I did
not have proper maps. A spur off of
395 to the west was taken, which is
labeled "J41" on my map, and is just S
of Little Lake, and goes up into the Sierra
to the Kern River. I camped near the
end of this road in the pinyon/juniper
forest near a spot where many people
were camped and apparently fishing in the R.
April 9 No crossbills were heard at this site,
so I drove back to 395 and then north
to the pass at highway 89 (Monitor Pass).
It was a good sunny day. I did notice a
fair crop of Jeffrey pine cones, but I
did not stop anywhere, including the
lodgepole pine zone where surely crossbills would
be encountered. I arrived home at around 5pm.
