April 7 in the ranges of Southern Arizona. I compared
(cont'd)
the plumages of the two males in front of
me and found no visible difference in color --
both were the typical "gray-headed" form with
rusty backs. The Cassin's finch was the
first bird shot out of a flock of 4-5,
and was collected yesterday morning. Cassius
finches sang here, also mountain chideater,
pygmy nuthatch, Steller jay, orange-crowned
warbler. I left this spot by mid-afternoon
and drove to Williams, Arizona, and beyond.
This is a detail of the Prescott NF campsite
I had:
burned area downslope
The forest at Prescott site was ponderosa pine,
douglas fir, oak scrub. I also heard
wild turkey & violet green or tree cyallows
& saw many western bluebirds. Raven was
seen.
I drove Arizona highway 89 north to Interstate
40, & drove this E to Arizona highway
64, then took this N. This road
cut through open ponderosa pine & juniper.
