(contd) who was not collected. I then set
out to tape record the seven birds
I had captured, so brought them up
to the truck, and away from the
road. As I sat recording at
processing birds, some bird-watchers
visited Bulfoot; first, an old man
(Morse ?) (according to name on binoculars-
"Morse - Portal", He had an old
black collie. He said he had
seen 3 large flocks up the mountain
and he also saw birds lower down
(5-6,000 ft) earlier this year,
and it was his impression that the
birds were moving upwards in elevation.
Next, a couple from central Texas,
who seemed only mildly concerned about
what I was doing there collecting
birds. They said these were the
first crossbills they'd seen.
I first removed a flock of 14
crossbills from the net (8 adult males,
5 adult females, and one juvenile)
and folded up the nets. All seemed
Type 2-sized and some gave
Type 2 flight calls upon release.
One male gave Type 2 alarm calls.
