Huachuca Mts., Arizona

and went up the jeep trail until it
(untl) was blocked-off for the Miller Peak
Wilderness. Here I camped for
the night.
May 21
Oresite Canyon, elev. 6300 ft. Cochise
Co., Ariz. The weather at dawn
mileage
was partly cloudy around the mountain's
49896
remnants of all the rain. Temp ~55°, The habitat I was in was mostly
oaks, with yucca (low type) as some
sumac (?), but also conifers, with
some Apache pine, limber pine, and
rare Douglas fir. There were also
few junipers. No crossbills were heard
here, as I stayed until about
8:00 am. Mexican Jays were common,
with Black-headed Grosbeaks, Rufous-
sided Towhees, Black-headed Gray
Warblers, as other birds I did not
identify. Whip-Moor-wills sang
in the very early morning. (I saw
a very grayish Great-Horned Owl
last night, along the road). I
walked the area somewhat, and also
drove it before leaving. Map on
next page.
