Journal J. Guth 1986 mixed with dry pinyon juniper habitat. It drizzled rain as I drove through this area, stopping several times to inspect trees and search for crossbills. At Espanola, which I reached by evening, I turned E on Hwy 76 toward Truchas. The weather was not bad in these evening hours, but dark clouds & storms were evident over all of the higher elevations. I drove about 6 mi. N from Truchas to a road which was not marked and turned E. Locality was indicated directly on a topo map. This area was a foothills-type area of 90% ponderosa pine, 10% pinyon juniper. Cones were of the old, last-years variety, still tars but empty and half-fallen off the trees. This particular area looks like it will have a moderate to weak crop of ponderosa pine cones this fall. Nightbirds were present at the site that evening.
