Helmes, R 1960 Lemmus 6 Aug Barrow, Alaska Near Denovik today, good lemming sign was observed. Many of the runway are well used, and usually can be traced to the burrows which are in use. The animals are seen frequently - most of these being juveniles. The tundra is still dry and most of the puddles have dried up. Only the large ponds are still in existence. The lemmings have utilized the drained troughs and many of the runways are located here. No lemming nests have been noted recently; most of the 45 handled have already dropped their litters. 12 Aug Barrow-Denovik, Alaska During the last 3 days, we have had a terrific rain which has flooded much of the tundra. Many of the runways are now underwater, and accordingly some of the burrows are filled with water. We have seen a little bit of freezing water also, but not enough to freeze all
