Holmes, R. 1960 Lemmus 9 July Skroavite, Alaska There seems to be a very noticeable lack I watch this year on the tundra. Most of the shallow ponds have dried up. The polygon ridge are bone-dry. It is now possible to sit on the mounds of moss without getting wet; This was impossible last year. It seems probable that the cut grass allows the water to soak at the soil with little retention at the surface. Also with the good weather we have had, the waters has evaporated rapidly, leaving little water left. This seems to be another important aspect of the lemming on the tundra. 13 July Barrow, Alaska The lemmings are still present but are not seen frequently. The majority of the 47 now seem to be present, so there should be a good reproduction in the population in a few weeks. Jorgans are still plentiful and are taking a fair number of lemmings.
