Plectrophenax nivalis
4.
15 june Barrow, Alaska
Several pairs are building nests around
the base. One is located under the roof
of the Narta shop. Another is on a
stack of tires behind a shed about
30 yards behind ABL. The nest
was composed of straw, sticks, grass
and mud. No eggs had been laid
by this morning. The mud appeared
to be stuck on the pieces of grass and
it was probably not put there intentionally.
At 1330, there were still no eggs
in the nest. Also, none at 2200.
17 june Barrow, Alaska
The nest in the stack of tires contained
2 eggs at 1100. The pair were not
present nor near the nest at this time.
18 june Barrow, Alaska
The above nest contained 3 eggs at 1000.
19 june Barrow, Alaska
The nest contained 4 eggs at 1200.
These birds are still seen frequently in
pairs and nesting may not be
completely underway yet. However,
most pairs probably have begun
their nesting. The males can be
heard singing throughout the tundra
at all times during the day.
