27 July Barrow, Alaska
Two nests #1+3 were visited,
both were deserted. The young
at #2 were still present nearby,
but were unvisited. Two at this
nest were found dead in the
enclosure. This may be due to
their not being able to join
with the chicks away from
the nest. Nests #11+12 were
also visible, and the chicks banded. At
dawn that day, the chicks
left the nest mound and were
found wondering over the tundra.
29 July - Two of the young at nest #3 were
seen flying just south of the
Beach ridge near the postline.
2 August - Two flying chicks seen on the line
plot on the Beach Ridge near the
gas line. These were from Nest #3.
In the afternoon, a moulting bird was
seen on the wet shore at Salt Lagoons.
3 August Barrow = So. Barrow 3, Alaska
During a trip to So. Barrow 3, as many
owl nests as possible were located,
and the chicks present were banded.
