29 june Ikerovikt Banners, Alaska.
evening, we stopped at owl nest
#4 at the side of Footprint Lake. The
nest contained 2 young which were only
partially grown (both were banded -
so they were probably between
500-700 gms in weight). There were
no other signs of the remainder of
the clutch. No egg shells were
present nor signs of dead young. The
area was searched for 30 yards
in all directions, and no young were
found. The nest was located on a
mound where there were 2 old fox
traps. Many feathers were scattered
about; and several old? eggshells
which appeared to be pheasant eggs
were present 2 feet from the nest.
Both adult birds were present. 18
lemming was at the edge of the nest.
There were no signs of wolverine
visitation to the nest, so whatever
happened (?) to the young may have been
from natural causes. Of course it is
possible that they were still
present in the area, but could not
be found. Owl nest #10 was
checked, and it still contained
