Holmes, R. 1960 Nyctea scandiaca 29 June Barrow - Ikorovith, Alaska In the morning, owl nests 3+2 were visited for the purpose of weighing the young. Nest #3 contained 7 young in various stage, of development (see Pitelka's Notes for weight). Both the 8+ & were present; nether bird mode any attempt to defend" the nest. Both remained within 100-150 yards, and during the time we were there, they were harassed constantly by jaegers. The defensive position against these jaegers was a described early (The owls attempt to raise their talon for protection & in doing so - jumped into the air). When the owls were flying, The jaegers would often dive-bomb them, and several times it appeared that actual physical corbat was made between the jeep & The owle (especially The 8). This nest (#3) was fenced, so that the young owle would not wander away. Nest #2 contained 7 young and 2 eggs, one of which was pipping. These birds were a little more aggressive. The 8 made several attempt at dive-bombing us whenever we at The nest. The 8 even made one field
