Holmes, R. 1960 Nyctea scandiaca 10. 27 June Barrow, Alaska After I arrival + checked the nest, I sat in the blind for 1½ hours. During this time, The 4 were very cautious + came to the nest about 6 times. Each time she was frightened away either by movement in the blind or jaegers nearby. When she was away from the nest, she would sit on the flat lands below the nest where she was continually attracted my jaisan. Its reaction to the dove bombing was to jump with air + apparently try to get her talons up in the direction of the intruders. In the process of doing this, she would jump about 2-4 feet in the air, bring her feet up, where at the same time, the body would flip (like someone attempting to do a somersault - but not quite making the flip). The 8th one then sat calmly along the ridge about 10 yards away. When I first approached the nest, he attempted to do a disrupting display by flapping his wings wildly and making a low grunting call.
