Holmes,R. 1960 Nycka scandiaca 7 June Barrow, Alaska Wings Slagging. This same display was seen by a S owl near the Inorn. It also stayed behind a mound and just "peeked" over. 8 June Barrow, Alaska Nest #1 was checked & it contained 7 eggs (2 had been taken by a lemming). The nest (a9) [illegible] contained 8 eggs & both birds were in close attendance. The S with the mound was seen to do the dincule display, not 1 to slough (drawn into the hole). 9 June -10 sec south/ Wohl Slough. Another(?) S was seen during the afternoon resting NE end of the fundra along Elson Lagoon. As I was watching him, he flew a short distance away from the mound where he had been setting and picked up a lemming with his beak. He then transferred it to his feet as before off and flew SW towards the Neck ridge. He landed at a ridge near the enclosure & began to eat the lemming. This is evidently -the S which had been seen along the ridge.
