Holmes,R. 1961 Larus hypoboreus 3 June Barrow, Alaska 4-5 adult seen sitting in the snow or flying - near the magnetic station on Pebble ridge. No feeding activity noted. 4 June - 2 seen near Voth's area. 5 June 4-5 seen in central marsh. One had picked up a lemming carcass, & brothers were trying to take it from him. Finally the bird flew off with the animal in its beak & landed near Newazel. When flushed, the lemming dropped & upon examination it was found that the carcass was an old dead up - partially skeletonized lemming - seemingly of no food value. 7 June Several adults seen in central marsh. 9 June 2 seen - Footprint Lake - 1 Ad - 13-4 yr. indiv. 11 June 1 seen feeding on a lemming on the west side of central marsh. Then other seen flying over the marsh. 20 June 1 seen near Footprint lake 24 June 2 seen (1 4"yr.) at turnera, south / Wobt. Sl. 13 July 50-60 seen So. of Voth's Slope - almost at Footprint where they were feeding on insects - which were in the Canton Remains. Most were 3rd or 4th year birds, but a few Ados. were present. 21 July Flock of 150+ seen just north of the insect plots - S.Hemy = polygonum - cabbage
