Holmes,P. 1960 24 July Barrow, Alaska Island - east 1 Cliftwood Pore, Occasionally, other birds were seen flying - in the same area. 31 July - A few seen near Tapkukul Island (east 1 Brodman's Island). 3 August - A nesting site was found on a lake - located about half way between dry lake & Lom Lake (just so, I owe nest #13). The adults were present, and both became excited at our approach. The 8? dived at us several times during the first few minutes, but then finally resorted to flying high and giving a loud gull-like cry. One chick was seen in the lake but was inaccessible. The lake itself was about 100 yards long x 75 yards wide. The nest was located on a small island (5'x2') about 25 feet from the west shore. It was composed of dried grasses which form a depression. The pellets were picked up for analysis. It appeared that they may have been feeding at the campground
