Holmes,P 1962 12 June Barrow, Alaska The song starts with several (1-4,5) introductory (may vary - pite n) notes - Tchuk ; This is followed by a "tree- like call - wheeja ~ which is repeated 3 to 7 times - Per in followers (Per, it slower, would sound like the motor-churning, if the semi-pal sdg- t When the bird in a cup gave a long sequence // Then it was very puscullus-like). This is followed by a series 4-5 notes which are high pitched & very musical ta-ta-tee-tee. & The cubine : whaa~. This is The complete song - The introductory note, The 3ris-sym phrase &/or the cubine are sometimes eliminated. AERIAL COURTSHIP: Long flights seen yesterday are part of this. Today there were not noted (except i - just before we left The area- A birds flew No. with the far edge (The high pfly- gms). Short chase by the 8 → t/ the 4 were seen about 3 times. The 8 flew just behind the 4-at the same level above the ground (4-6'). The flights are generally fast - not erratic but the birds traverse widely over the tundra, usually landing several feet apart. One chuble in flight. The 8 made several fast turns every beat, cabbing up with the 4 then set its wings (horzatal) for a brief time & gave 3-1 the musical tree-note. In doing
