Stercorarius pomarinus
3 August Barrow: St Barrow 3, Alaska
encounter were noted. The young are
evidently present, but just cannot
be seen. About 4 or 5 flying juveniles
were noted during the trip - the
first for the season. A dead adult
was noted at our owl nest,
and a dead chick was at
another. (see Snow Owl notes).
6 August Barrow - Skroavik, Alaska.
Numerous flying juveniles were seen between
Barrow and the lake. At the plot,
The pair at the NW corner had 1
flying young that was seen. This bird
was a melanistic individual - while
both adults are normal. On the
cast side | The plot near the lake
shore, there was a normal less
pair with a flying juvenile
which had white bars extending
clear across the upper surface
of the wing.
The strip of white was about
2 inches wide and was very
noticeable + out-standing. (The
♂ adult had a little more white
than normal at the wrist joint -
he & was melanistic).
