Erolia ferruginea
12 June Barrow, Alaska
The ? would start out behind the ? - or facing her -
but the two birds would walk back & forth
in zigzag fashion - sometimes in front, sometimes
behind the ? - thereby showing the white
rump. She would then fly off - he would
follow - sometimes giving the call in flight -
both land & feed. No wings - or were
seen from landing - [only prior to the ground
courtesy & in the courtship display].
No long chasing was seen today - The
birds would just fly 50-100 yards at the
most - settle & feed. The ? after stood
& fed in the hunched posture with scapulars
& back feathers raised - head lowered - but
not extended forward. Several times he
sat into a depression - with tail and pointed
wings pointing high - usually he then
stood up & walked off - but twice he was
seen to stay in the cup for at least 30sec.
The tail - being moved from side to side.
A copulation ? at least an attempt
was noted - when the ? was standing
on the back / the ? - with his wings
quivering - the two jumped off - into air -
flown 10' - began feeding. This
took place in the high, block-topped polygon
area - No. 1 (the main display area - see map later -)
