Stercorarius pomarinus
14 june Barrow, Alaska
Of the pair. Sometimes when three
birds were flying together there
would be no conflict. Then all of a
sudden, two of the birds would turn
and chase the third until finally
they stopped the attack and the
two pursuers took off by themselves.
One bird was seen with a lemming
in its mouth, and it was immediately
joined by two other birds. After
a chase for 30 yards or so, the bird
with the grey and one of the others
turned on the third bird and drove
it off. At this time the two remaining
birds landed over a hill and the
rest was not observed. Several
seconds later, however, both birds were
seen standing in the snow about
2 feet apart. Apparently the lemming
had not been consumed.
2000. About 15 birds seen in the
hummocks and surrounding
furnace. Ten were seen at one time
sitting on the ground. The other
two were flying here and there.
No aggressiveness ever seen,
except when one individual landed
