Stercorius Pomarinus
14 June Barrow, Alaska.
The drum area. There seemed to be
m pairing in this group, for
conflict was not noted. One bird
settled on the ground for a
few seconds then flew off
with the other two towards the
N.E. At the same time, 2 other
birds were seen near the drum
area near the cliffs. They were
both sitting about 20 yards apart.
One flew up and flew about 100
yards and settled down again. The
other did not follow.
1300-1600. Many indiv seen on
the tundra. Some were in group
of 2. Others three, and still others
by themselves. At least three
and possibly four pair seemed to
have established some territoriality,
as they were noted to drive other
birds out of their area. An attempted
copulation was attempted once.
The female was spread out in the
snow, and the male was seen to
"walk" up on to her back. Contact
apparently was not made, but
the behavior emphasizes the "intention"
