Holmes,R, 1959 4. Stercorius Pomarinus 14 June Barrow, Alaska. The drum area. There seemed to be m pairing in this group, for conflict was not noted. One bird settled on the ground for a few seconds then flew off with the other two towards the N.E. At the same time, 2 other birds were seen near the drum area near the cliffs. They were both sitting about 20 yards apart. One flew up and flew about 100 yards and settled down again. The other did not follow. 1300-1600. Many indiv seen on the tundra. Some were in group of 2. Others three, and still others by themselves. At least three and possibly four pair seemed to have established some territoriality, as they were noted to drive other birds out of their area. An attempted copulation was attempted once. The female was spread out in the snow, and the male was seen to "walk" up on to her back. Contact apparently was not made, but the behavior emphasizes the "intention"
